Because of the reefs and sandbars that shelter it, this beach is one of the safest locations to swim in Sri Lanka. However, because there are no lifeguards nearby, it is advisable to take the required measures. If you want to see the flashy marine species (reef fish) around these reefs and rocks, snorkel out to the western and Pehambiya ends. Snorkelers should visit between October and April. Small canoes (oru in Sinhala) maintained protected by local fisherman are typical sight on this beach, particularly at the Pehambiya end.
